The volume includes both solid material and pore space, and bulk density is indicative of the regolith cohesion. Bulk density is defined as the mass or weight of overdry material per unit of bulk volume, expressed in g cm −3. (1995) showed that bulk density is a useful indicator in studying the development, weathering and dynamics of the regolith. Weathering processes have been studied also by considering the main physical parameters that indirectly control regolith cohesion, hardness and resistance, and, thus, development, such as the Atterberg limits, the material bulk density, the moisture content, the void ratio, the surface mechanical resistance, the potential volume exchange, being these indicators sensitive to seasonal dynamics, variations in temperature and water supply, and slope aspect.
